Tarak Mehta passes away at 87

Noted Gujarati writer Tarak Mehta is dead. Tarak Mehta died at the age of 87. The Padmashree awardee and humourist was the inspiration behind the TV show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’

Noted Gujarati writer and humourist, Tarak Mehta passed away at the age of 87 on Wednesday, March 1. It is reported that the celebrated writer, Tarak Mehta succumbed to prolonged illness and passed away in Ahmedabad today morning. Tarak Mehta had shifted to Ahmedabad with his second wife, Indu and had been staying there since a decade. Tarak Mehta is survived by his wife and daughter.

Before his death, one of Tarak Mehta’s most popular works is Sab TV’s show ‘Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah’, which is based on the writer’s column ‘Duniya Ne Undha Chashma’ in Gujarati language. The famous column is being reprinted in a weekly Gujarati magazine Chitralekha. Tarak Mehta was honoured with a Padma Shri in 2015 and his contribution to literature includes 80 books which were reportedly reprinted and launched on his 80th birthday in 2009.

While Tarak Mehta married Indu, his first wife Ila tied the knot with Manohar Doshi. After Doshi passed away, Ila shifted to Ahmedabad and stayed in the same building as Tarak Mehta and Indu. The trio shared a good bond. However, in 2009, Ila Doshi committed suicide by jumping from the seventh floor of her apartment due to depression, states a report on timesofindia.com.

Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani remembered the deceased writer Tarak Mehta and shared, “Saddened by the death of Tarak Mehta – humourist and columnist. He always brought smile to our faces. My condolences to family members.” Paresh Rawal too condoled Tarak Mehta’s death by saying, “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Shri Tarak Mehta. A great humourist in any language! RIP Mehta Saheb.”
