Better reviews and word of mouth publicity have clearly worked in favour of ‘Rustom’ in the Box Office fight against ‘Mohenjo Daro’. In the domestic market, ‘Rustom’ has garnered Rs 50.38 crore in the first three days of its release whereas ‘Mohenjo Daro’ managed to collect just about Rs 30.6 crore. According to cinema world experts, this is far from expected as celebs Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan’s pair, clubbed with a historic topic, is a tested formula in Bollywood. The opening day itself saw ‘Rustom’ sprinting to almost Rs 15 crore while ‘Mohenjo Daro’ lagged behind at only Rs 9 crore on the Bollywood Box Office in India.
While ‘Mohenjo Daro’ is a period drama, ‘Rustom’ is based on the infamous Nanavati murder case of 1959. ‘Rustom’ released on the 2,300-plus screens in India and a little over 550 prints overseas. Compare this to ‘Mohenjo Daro’ which was released on over 2,500 screens in India alone. Thanks to the advance booking and being all over the place to create the hype and hoopla, the occupancy for ‘Rustom’ was over 50 percent on its opening day, Friday. This has made ‘Rustom’ the fourth biggest Bollywood opener of 2016.
It awaits to be seen if ‘Mohenjo Daro’ can catch up with ‘Rustom’ in the Box Office race this week. Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde starrer ‘Mohenjo Daro’ is directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker. Winning the Box Office race, ‘Rustom’, starring Akshay Kumar, Ileana D’Cruz and Esha Gupta is directed by Tinu Desai.
