Sony plays around with KBC, Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke and Kapil Sharma!

From attracting unwarranted controversies surrounding many shows to abrupt ends and even rerunning old episodes, Sony TV seems to be inviting a lot of trouble

Sony Entertainment Television, aka Sony TV, did some major time management to accommodate Amitabh Bachchan’s popular game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ (‘KBC’) season 9. Despite that, the channel is still struggling to maintain a smooth flow of many of its shows. First off, there was a curtain call for its popular thriller ‘Beyhadh’, but soon the channel decided to extend the Kushal Tandon and Jennifer Winget-starrer soap and instead ended their romantic show ‘Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi’. Amitabh Bachchan was given the prime time slot of 9 pm – 10 pm for ‘KBC 9’, after which their controversial programme ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ was to air in the restrictive hour of the small screen.

However, as the week began with Big B’s return to the small screen with ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 9’, the channel shockingly did not telecast any further episodes of ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ and scrapped the concept completely. In order to fill in the time space, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 9’ was extended till 10:30 pm on its first day and since then the quiz show has been taking up the slot at least till 10:15 pm instead of a general one-hour programme, from 9 pm to 10 pm.

If all this confusion and chaos were not enough, the makers of ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’, Shashi and Sumeet Mittal, promised to return with a new venture on Sony TV as soon as possible and in came the fresh promos of ‘Ye Un Dino Ki Baat Hai’! This TV show will take the viewers back to the ’90s with a teenage love story. The programme will occupy the time slot of 10:30 pm to 11 pm and will begin telecast soon.

Interestingly, Sony also faced flak for ending ‘Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi’ on a short notice. To compensate, the channel suddenly decided to bring Erica Fernandes and Shaheer Sheikh’s love saga on TV with a second season in September, once ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 9’ ends. Reports suggest that the show will take off from where it left off, with Dev and Sonakshi bringing up their kids Suhana and Shubh.

And while the weekdays programmes are still settling in, comedian Kapil Sharma has added to the channel’s woes. ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, which used to air during the weekends, has now got a break. The TV programme recently got an extension of contract from Sony, but with Kapil’s ill health and inability to shoot any further episodes, the comedy act has been put on the back-burner. Krushna Abhishek and Mithun Chakraborty’s ‘The Drama Company’ will replace the prime time slot of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ on the weekends, while the channel will rerun old episodes of Kapil’s comic acts.

It seems like Sony TV needs to get its act together very soon to survive the tough competition from other strong channels like Colors, Star TV and Zee TV.
