While many think that the celebs and cinema world are minting crores at the Bollywood Box Office, they are also paying very high in the form of various taxes. Actors like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are some of the country’s highest tax payers every year. Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar opines that the life for producers is difficult considering the growing list of taxes, “The film industry is paying a lot of tax and if you speak to any producer, they will tell you that very few films are making money. They are bleeding because with multiplexes, different taxation like service tax, luxury tax, etc, it is just crazy. It is not possible to break even. You have to make your films really tight and just hope that they work.”
In the past, Farah Khan too has expressed her displeasure with the service and many other taxes levied on actors. Now with Zoya Akhtar raising her voice for the ever burning issue of taxes, will the government do anything?
