Anupam Kher will turn former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh in Vijay Ratnakar Gutte’s upcoming Bollywood film, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, inspired by the book with the similar name
Anupam Kher is set to play a powerful political figure, that of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a film based on the book ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making And Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’. The book is written by the former PM’s media advisor Sanjay Baru. Sharing the first poster of the film in what came as a surprise to almost the entire entertainment industry, Anupam Kher wrote, “To reinvent yourself as an actor is to challenge yourself. Looking forward to portraying Dr Manmohan Singh in ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’.” National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta has written the screenplay for this political saga, which will be directed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte. The makers of ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ plan to release the Bollywood movie in December 2018, which is just before the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Interestingly, the Bharatiya Janata Party is ruling in the Centre and Anupam Kher, who will play Congress’ Dr Manmohan Singh, is closely affiliated to the BJP.
The memoir, ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making And Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’, was released before the General Elections in 2014 when BJP championed as the ruling party in the Centre. Author Sanjay Baru served as Dr Manmohan Singh’s advisor from May 2004 to August 2008, and has alleged in the book that most key decisions were taken by Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party president. She was the power centre even in the Government back then. Whether all this will be shown in ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, enacted by Anupam Kher, or not will be interesting to look out for.
