Shah Rukh Khan inaugurated the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI 2017) in Goa. His speech emphasised on the rich storytelling culture of India. Invoking a feeling of togetherness, Shah Rukh mentioned the Sanskrit word ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, which means that the world is one family. “The essence of storytelling is incomplete if there is no story-listener. I believe that the storytellers and story-listeners are, or should be, like a family. There is a word in Sanskrit: ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, it means bringing the world together like a family,” said the 52-year-old star. Many related Shah Rukh’s comment at IFFI 2017 to the ongoing ‘Padmavati’ controversy.

With the Hindi film industry going through troubled times with the release of ‘Padmavati’, Shah Rukh Khan added that the films should bring people together and not tear them apart. “I believe no matter what your language is, no matter which country your story comes from and no matter what your ideology is, storytelling and listening should be a familial experience. It should bind us all together and make the relationships stronger even in the face of dissent and discussions, as it usually happens in a family instead of tearing us apart,” added Shah Rukh Khan, without naming the film.

Many celebs and cinema stars like Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, Jhanvi Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Union I&B Minister Smriti Irani and also Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar attended the opening ceremony of IFFI 2017 apart from Shah Rukh Khan.
