Shahid Kapoor has returned to theatres with his rugged avatar of an alcoholic and drug-inducing character in ‘Kabir Singh’ having good reviews, and the film stars Kiara Advani as the leading lady. The flick is a remake of the hit Telugu drama ‘Arjun Reddy’ and expectations are that ‘Kabir Singh’ may earn anywhere close to Rs 12-14 crore on its first day at the box office as the reviews pour in. On the opening day, the film released on approximately 2,500 screens across India. Going by the early morning shows and advance booking, ‘Kabir Singh’ has recorded 50 percent occupancy and has the potential to emerge as one of the top grossers of 2019. Back in May, Shahid had opined, “The most difficult thing about doing a remake is to rediscover the character. I loved the original film and efforts were to make an original flick without losing the inherent beauty of ‘Arjun Reddy’.” ‘Kabir Singh’ is directed by Sandeep Vanga, who also helmed the original movie back in 2017.
The reviews of ‘Kabir Singh’ suggest that Shahid Kapoor has put up an impressive act as a doctor with anger management issues, which was also evident since the time the trailer of the film was out. To portray his character convincingly on screen, the actor had trained with actual doctors. Shahid spent considerable amount of time in the company of surgeons, observing their procedures to adapt their working styles. Speaking about the preparations, Shahid had said, “Kabir Singh is an accomplished surgeon – perhaps the best in his field. So the mannerisms and actions needed to play the character had to be precise. Interacting with experts gave me a deeper understanding of the craft.” Whether ‘Kabir Singh’ will hit the Rs 100-crore mark at the box office or not, only time will tell.
