Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ambitious film ‘Padmavati’ was cancelled from releasing from its scheduled date of December 1 following a spate of protests from across the country and also for the lack of censor certificate. However, trade buzz now suggests that the producers, Viacom18 Motion Pictures have locked January 26 as the new release date for ‘Padmavati’. An official announcement to this tune will be made soon. Interestingly, coming on the same date are two other major projects, Akshay Kumar’s ‘PadMan’ and Sidharth Malhotra, Manoj Bajpayee-starrer ‘Aiyaary’. All these films are eyeing to cash in on the Republic Day weekend. Hence it remains to be seen who will bow out of competition. But for now, ‘Padmavati’s’ release date seems to be January 26.

After a fringe group like Shri Rajput Karni Sena and some local bodies in the state of Rajasthan protested against ‘Padmavati’, the film’s release was postponed from December 1. They alleged dream sequence between Mughal ruler Alauddin Khilji and Rajput queen Padmini in the film, which were said to hurt the sentiments of the community. The controversy soon erupted and many states in India banned the film from releasing. Protests quickly turned into threats of killing and chopping off body parts of Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and the makers of ‘Padmavati’ immediately announced the release of the film to be pushed back from December 1. After deliberating and producers taking their time deciding, ‘Padmavati’ is tipped to release on January 26, as it stands today.

To be released on January 26, Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed and co-produced ‘Padmavati’ stars Deepika Padukone in the titular role, Shahid Kapoor as Maharawal Ratan Singh and Ranveer Singh in the role of Alauddin Khilji.
