Begum Jaan Vidya Balan: Trading your body for survival can never be easy
Begum Jaan Vidya Balan feels that only after experiencing the flesh trade through her upcoming Bollywood film did she understand better how difficult it is to trade one’s body
Vidya Balan has stepped into the intense character of a brothel owner with ‘Begum Jaan’. The celebrity actress fiercely mouths expletives in the trailer. “The kind of premise that my character comes from, most ladies there use abusive language very easily. You can’t be Begum Jaan and not abuse,” says Vidya. The Hindi cinema actress goes on to add that the character of Begum Jaan made her understand the pain of flesh trade, “As a woman and a student of sociology, I was very well aware about these things academically. But I experienced them only when I did ‘Begum Jaan’. When you read about it, there are a lot of debates. But when you experience it, the exploitation and trading the body for survival, I don’t think it can get easy even if you have done it 2000 times! There is a lot of anger in them and they vent this through their language.” ‘Begum Jaan’ is produced by Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt’s Vishesh Films and is directed by Srijit Mukherji. ‘Begum Jaan’ will release on April 14.
